Sound Foundation

01 · SOUNDS TO WORDS

Early Reading Foundation

A child who recognises a word may still be guessing at the next one. We help children hear the parts, connect them to print, and work through words they haven’t memorised.

START HERE · MODULES 1 & 2

Sound Foundation

Hear the sounds clearly.

Read the letters, write them, and build words with them.

Why start with listening?

Hearing the difference between bat and bet, or picking out the final sound in cat, can take practice. Listening comes first, giving children something solid and familiar to connect to the letters they see.

CLASS LENGTH

CLASS SIZE

ESTIMATED TIME FOR BOTH MODULES
About 11–14 weeks*

Based on two 90-minute classes per week, with time allowed for review.

Please contact us for current tuition and group availability for Modules 1 and 2.

MODULE 1 · SOUNDS & JOINS

Hear it. Say it. Join it.

Children meet the five short vowels and 25 consonant sounds, in groups of five. First, they listen without letters. Then they connect the sound to its letter card, write the letter that represents the sound, and begin joining sounds.

• Tell sounds apart before naming letters.

• Connect a sound, its card, and its written form.

• Join consonants and vowels in both directions: consonant–vowel (C–V) and vowel–consonant (V–C).

Workbook 1 excerpt: matching uppercase and lowercase vowel letters

MODULE 2 · SHORT-VOWEL WORDS

Build it. Read it. Spell it.

Those sounds become real words. Children move the cards, read what they have built, and spell by listening to the sounds in order.

• Read words such as bat, ship, duck, and thumb.

• Meet alternative spellings within familiar words.

• Begin two-syllable words such as sunset and napkin.

Workbook 2 excerpt: words including back, lamb, gnat and wrap alongside alternative spelling choices

INSIDE A 90-MINUTE CLASS

Every child has something to do.

Fingers, cards, and whiteboards go up together. The teacher can see each child’s response, and children keep working throughout the lesson.

01

Listen & notice

Hear a sound, compare it with another, and show what you heard.

02

Move & build

Use sound cards and games to connect, change, and rebuild.

03

Write & check

Write on a whiteboard, show your answer, and work through the next question.

04

Read & practise

Use the reader and workbook to practise what the class has just learned.

Accuracy comes before speed. When children time their reading, they compare with their previous attempt, keeping accurate reading as the priority.

A first stage, with room to grow. Sound Foundation is the starting point of our Early Reading Foundation track. Later work builds on these sound–spelling connections and develops strategies for reading unfamiliar words. Ask about Sound Foundation ↗

BETWEEN CLASSES

A small routine. A clear view of progress.

Something familiar to bring home
A reader and workbook come home after each class. Your child reads the assigned reader page aloud three times, colouring one circle after each reading.

A check with the teacher
At the end of each module, we evaluate each child’s progress one to one to identify the skill level they have securely reached. We then show parents which skills have been mastered and which still need practice.

Audio support is on the way
Sound recordings accessed through QR codes are coming soon. The printed materials already have space for these codes, but the recordings are not yet available.

PLANNING GUIDE

Time to build the foundation

Our standard schedule is two 90-minute classes per week.

Module 1 · 14 classes · 7–9 weeks

Module 2 · 8 classes · 4–5 weeks

Both modules · About 11–14 weeks

We also offer 60-minute classes and groups that meet once a week. These options take longer to complete both modules. We can explain the expected timeline for the group you’re considering.

Vocabulary & Sentences

02 · WORDS TO SENTENCES

Vocabulary & Sentence Architecture

Once children can read independently, we help them see what each word or group of words is doing in a sentence. Colour and shape make the structure visible; discussion and sentence building give it meaning.

Usually Grades 1–4 · Readiness matters more than age

What children work on

• Learn word meanings through pictures, actions, and experience.

• Use grammar symbols to identify naming, acting, and describing words.

• See how phrases connect, then build and revise sentences.

The aim is to choose words that express their meaning accurately and explain how a sentence works.

MAKING STRUCTURE VISIBLE

Sam shared sour candy.

First, find who or what the sentence is about and what happens. Then look at the details that add meaning.

Sam shared sweet candy with the students.

Noun · Verb · [Adjective · Noun] · [Preposition · Noun Phrase]

Who shared? What was shared? What does ‘sweet’ describe? Who received the candy?

Reading & Writing

03 · SENTENCES TO IDEAS

Analytical Reading & Writing

Students take a text apart to see how its sentences and ideas connect. They discuss what they notice, support their interpretation with evidence from the text, and use that understanding to write their own connected paragraphs.

Usually Grades 3–7 · For students with a secure sentence foundation

What students work on

• Map the relationships between sentences and ideas.

• Explain an interpretation using details from the text.

• Plan, draft, review, and revise writing for a real reader.

The aim is a clear main point, evidence that supports it, and writing that a reader can follow.

FROM UNDERSTANDING TO EXPRESSION

“What makes you say that?”

A useful answer needs a reason. Students practise finding one, explaining it, and testing whether their explanation holds together.

01  Notice what the text actually says.
02  Connect the detail to an idea.
03  Explain it in your own words.
04  Review what your reader still needs to understand your point.
